Blooms Dropped

Friday, December 19th, 2008

The blooms on my Thanksgiving Cactus all dropped within the past two weeks.

We got new windows, then the humidity in the house increased so much that we had to get a dehumidifier, so I’m sure that the sudden drop in the humidity had something to do with it.

Thanksgiving Cactus Seeds

I’ve been trying to pollinate my Thanksgiving Cactus so we’ll see what happens.

Have you ever gotten seeds from your Holiday Cactus?

If so tell me how you did it.

Pink and White Thanksgiving Cactus Bloom

Monday, November 17th, 2008

The blooms on the Thanksgiving Cactus are finally starting to open.

There are a few buds on the side that didn’t have any buds on it last week, but not many.

It’s easy to forget how beautiful the blooms are when you haven’t seen them in so long.

I’ve been looking around when I visit shops with flowers and so far all I’ve seen are the Thanksgiving Cacti, and not the Christmas Cacti in the shops.

I was a little confused about some of them, because they didn’t have as many pointy lobes, but they all had the yellow anthers instead of the purplish brown anthers of the Christmas Cactus, so that made it easy.

Have you seen any Christmas cacti anywhere?

It would be nice to have a couple that bloom at different times of the year, especially since these are easy for me to keep alive :-).

It’s not a Christmas Cactus - it’s a Thanksgiving Cactus

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Yup - I’m just realizing why my “Christmas” cactus is starting to bloom.

I get the University of Minnesota Extensions newsletter, and when I saw the heading “Holiday Cactus” I just thought they didn’t want to say Christmas anymore.

But when I read it, I realized there are Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter Cacti.

I had no idea.

I have a Thanksgiving one - it’s beautiful and pink and white - and blooming now on the side was facing the windows, but not the side that was facing the fish tank.

I turned it around, so we’ll see what happens.

Did you know that there were different Holiday Cacti, or am I the only one?

Do you have one?

Which kind is it?
