Fuji Apple Tree
Posted by Sarah O. on June 23, 2008

We finally trimmed our poor Fuji Apple Tree.
We got the tree at Lowe’s last year, and I knew it wasn’t hardy here it’s a zone 5, and we’re zone 3 or 4 depending on who you ask - but I love Fuji apples, so I figured it was worth a try for $20.00.
The tree didn’t leaf out until the week before Memorial Day, and even then only a few tiny leaves grew on two of the three branches.
Unfortunately, they quickly shriveled up and died.
We do have some sprouts coming about 6 inches away from the ground, and they look like apple leaves, but I’m not really sure if that’s what they are or if the tree was grafted and the sprouts are something else.
I hope it’s apple though
.
What do you think?
Does it look like apple tree leaves?
The leaves are the same shape as our Snowsweet Apple Tree, but they aren’t as fuzzy as the Snowsweet.

That looks like an apple, but it might not be a fuji — you see most apple trees are branches from a donor tree grafted onto a rootstock from some other variey of apple.
Check this out — I got peaches and almonds from the same tree!

Thanks Tighe Lory.
I knew that most were grafted, but I didn’t realize they were grafted onto another apple tree.
I guess we’ll wait and see for now – we can always take it down if it isn’t a fuji apple and put something we’ll like in it’s place.

Hi – I know you wrote this a while ago, but I was just curious if you had any success with your Fuji Apple Tree. I too am located in Minnesota and was wondering if it would be worthwhile to try planting a fuji apple tree. My husband is from the South and these are his favorite type of apple….
Thanks!

Hi Nancy,
We finally took the Fuji out last month.
Only one branch was growing from the bottom, and I’m not sure if it was Fuji, or the part that had been grafted on.
If it was in a more protected area, it might have been ok, I’m just not sure.
Good luck if you try it – let me know how it turns out.
